IMMERSE

When we deep dive into how human attention works, we realize that we have a “scratch pad” in our minds that we use to bring into focus relevant information, so that we are able to see the full picture. Once we have the context, we are able to process all the information and begin creating.

IDENTIFY

The biggest hindrance to productivity is distraction. Losing focus on the task at hand would require our minds to “reload” information to our “scratch pad” and begin the process all over again. Therefore when we design office spaces, we can enhance productivity by reducing distractions to an absolute minimum.

IDEATE

How can we eliminate distractions?

• Clear zoning - separating this section allows to us to create a “do-not disturb” area to remind our coworkers we are not available
• Noise in this area should be quiet - library like.
• When seated, we should have visual privacy - not being able to make eye contact with others as eye-contact invites a conversation.
• And of course, the basics of electrical and internet connectivity must be top notch with adequate lighting to illuminate our work.

IMMERSE

Collaboration is all about multiple faculties coming together to solve a problem. As the world becomes exceedingly complex, businesses need to learn how to mesh various skills and resources to solve business challenges.

IDENTIFY

Sharing ideas and knowledge is key in the collaborative process!

IDEATE

How can we achieve this through design?

• Clear Zoning - an area which is known for a team to get together and brainstorm without the distraction from the rest of the organization.
• Seating layout should be circular so that everyone is able to see each other
• Connectivity - ease of access to power outlets and ease of connection to the screen sharing.
• Lots of writing surfaces, such as whiteboards or glass boards, that everyone can see.

IMMERSE

Because first impressions matter, it is important that we take 100% ownership of the entire meeting experience to give ourselves the best possible chance to win business deals. Creating the optimum environment via interior architecture allows us to control the battlefield and tip the odds to our favor. When designing the meeting experience, there are 2 dimensions for us to consider:

IDENTIFY

Professional vs Informal
Some meetings are highly collaborative and would benefit from an intimate and informal setting. If the client is more relaxed, the more likely they are willing to share difficult issues. Other meetings can be confrontational, like negotiating a lawsuit, and therefore the meeting would benefit from everyone being as professional as possible.

Power Dynamics
On one side of the spectrum, we would want our clients to think of us as an expert - a position of authority. On the other extreme, we would want to show respect to our clients. Thereby placing the client as the position of authority

IDEATE

By elevating one side of the meeting room, we create a sense of our clients’ looking up at us, providing ourselves with a sense of authority. Conversely, when we are looking up at our client, our client is provided the impression of authority. Relative eye levels are key in creating a suitable power dynamic.

Placing seats closer to each other, as well as decreasing the table width, allows us to feel closer to the people we are meeting with - providing an informal and intimate setting. On the other hand, placing seats further apart and increasing table width provides a sense of distance and professionalism. Best for confrontational meetings.
